Eugenio Picano, MD, Ph.D., was born in Cassino, Italy, on October 10th, 1958. He earned his degree in medicine in 1981, completed a Cardiology fellowship in 1984, and received his Ph.D. in Cardiovascular Pathophysiology from Pisa University in 1993. Until October 30th, 2023, he served as the Research Director in the Biomedicine Department of the National Research Council.
Dr. Picano is a clinical cardiologist with a strong background in cardiovascular imaging and multidisciplinary research. He has authored 520 papers in peer-reviewed journals and has an h-index of 98 according to Google Scholar as of April 1, 2023. He is recognized for his contributions to stress echocardiography, medical radiation effects on doctors and patients, extravascular lung water detection by lung ultrasound, and non-invasive biopsy of atherosclerotic plaque by tissue characterization techniques.
His book, "Stress Echocardiography," published by Springer Verlag, is in its seventh edition as of 2023 and has been translated into six languages.
